From voting towers to unique bags
On March 18, Amsterdam elected a new city council. To remind residents to vote, striking voting towers were placed at all district offices across the city.
Once the call to vote had fulfilled its purpose, it was time for Unbegun to take action. Commissioned by the City of Amsterdam, the used fabrics were given a second life as unique shoppers.
The bags were then handed out to the new members of the city council. A temporary message for the city became a lasting product with a story.
Smart design, hardly any waste
When developing the pattern for the shoppers, we made sure as much fabric as possible could be upcycled. The shopper consists of two parts that fit together like puzzle pieces when marked on the fabrics. In total, we were able to make 240 shoppers, using almost all of the material.

Ready for every errand
This shopper is made for everyday moments and life on the go. Ideal for a quick grocery run or returning deposit bottles. Finished using it? Simply fold it up and slip it into your jacket pocket. Easy to carry by hand or over your shoulder.
Handmade and one of a kind
All shoppers are handmade and carefully finished. The red stitching is a subtle nod to the City of Amsterdam’s visual identity. The base was given an extra reinforced seam, ensuring the bag lasts for years. Because each shopper is assembled by hand, no two bags are the same.
Made where their story began
The bags are proudly handmade and fully locally produced. The fabrics from the voting towers did not travel the world before getting a second life. They were transformed into unique shoppers in the very city where their story began.
First, the used fabrics are carefully checked and washed when needed. Then we cut them using custom-made patterns to preserve as much material as possible. Finally, all parts are assembled by hand with great attention to detail.
This is how we gave the material from Amsterdam’s voting towers a second life locally: from temporary message to bag made for years of use.
